Robert Mapplethorpe documentary

While watching the Robert Mapplethorpe documentary, I found it to be very engrossing in the way that it talks about how he created all his pieces during a time that it wasn’t quite common. When the documentary begins it talks about his youth and on how he actually wasn’t that interested in photography at first. Although later on become intrigued by photography and from then on he created art. At first his photographs consisted of portraits of people and even flowers but he started testing the limits. He began photographing naked bodies in a way that most would never considered to do. He was open about using the body as art and wasn’t afraid to touch base on the topic of sex and nudity. This cause a lot of commotion during his generation since it was uncommon. This was during a time of conservatism. I found his photographs in the way that he normalized the body and how he used a lot of highlights and shadows to create art but I do understand how some of his work created so much controversy.
